Inside Zappos' manager-free "holacracy"
Online shoe-retailer Zappos is scrapping the traditional managerial structure and refashioning itself as a "holacracy," in which top-down corporate hierarchies are replaced with autonomous but interconnected "circles." The format has never been tried at a company as large as Amazon-owned Zappos, which has 1,500 employees. "There are certainly people who hold a bigger scope of purpose for the organization than others. What it does do is distribute leadership into each role," says John Bunch, one of the architects of the transition.
