United, Continental put merging MRO lower on priority list
United Airlines and Continental Airlines are waiting to merge maintenance, repair and operations. "History tells us that one reason mergers fail is because carriers didn't realize that everything doesn't have to happen at once," said Jim Keenan, United's senior vice president for technical operations." The merged carrier is focusing first on combining operations that directly affect passengers.

BSEE director: U.S. is working on new rules for blowout preventers
The U.S. government will continue to strengthen safety standards for offshore drilling, particularly those covering blowout preventers, two years after the Gulf of Mexico oil spill, writes James Watson, director of the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement. "We have already improved the testing and certification requirements for blowout preventers over the last two years. ... [W]e will be proposing new rules for how blowout preventers are designed, how they must perform and how they must be maintained over their lifespans," Watson writes.

Reliability is becoming more crucial, exec says
A key way for companies to gain a competitive advantage is by adopting reliability programs that reduce costs and keep operations running smoothly, writes Ron Stallworth, a global business manager at Honeywell Process Solutions. "Today?s global markets mean that it is less likely for a single company to be able to influence upstream or downstream market prices. It can, however, influence its individual operations through cost reduction, improved efficiencies and other internal factors," he writes.

Analysis: Latest industrial revolution is transforming employment
The third industrial revolution is under way, as manufacturing goes digital, profoundly changing how and where people work, according to The Economist. "The factory of the future will focus on mass customisation -- and may look more like those weavers' cottages than Ford's assembly line," the magazine notes.

Why purchasing decisions require collaboration

Is your company heading for an iceberg?
The anniversary of the Titanic disaster should give business leaders pause for thought, writes Mark Bonchek. The ship's officers ignored ice warnings, failed to realize the threat posed by the iceberg ahead of them, and botched their evasive maneuvers by slamming the engines into reverse. "Consider where the icebergs might be that you can't see," Bonchek advises. "... And when you do see a threat, beware of hitting the brakes; the best reaction might be to step on the gas."
