Delta subsidiary will maintain Brazilian airline's engines; deal is backed by loan guarantee
The Export-Import Bank has given an $84.8 million loan guarantee to BG VRG Linhas Aereas, a Brazilian airline. As part of the agreement, the carrier will ship its engines to a Delta Air Lines subsidiary for maintenance. Delta has called for reform of the Export-Import Bank in the past.

Ancillary revenue, capacity restraint help US Airways offset fuel spike
Discipline in capacity growth and ancillary revenue will continue to help US Airways counteract soaring fuel prices, Chief Operating Officer Robert Isom said. The airline generates ancillary revenue by charging for luggage. He also noted that he expects that ?growth is going to be very limited in the U.S. marketplace as a whole.?

JetBlue remains profitable during tough times
JetBlue Airways' shares may be 80% down from their high, but the carrier is still profitable, this analysis notes. The airline finished 2011 with net income of $86 million and close to $1.2 billion in cash and short-term investments. However, there is cause for some concern. "JetBlue started as the airline for the New York leisure traveler. They don't have the route structure or the miles to compete with the majors for business dollars," said analyst Helane Becker.

Passengers are overtaxed on airfares, A4A says
Airlines for America has launched a campaign saying that airline passengers are overtaxed by the government. The new fare disclosure rule by the Department of Transportation requires that airlines include taxes in fare prices. "The aviation industry and our passengers currently pay 17 separate federal taxes and fees, a hodgepodge thrown together and added to over the years without any guiding rationale or consideration for their overall impact on demand or affordability," said Steve Lott, an A4A spokesman.

Some of the reasons for the requested changes include cabin innovations and breakthroughs with in-flight entertainment systems. "The A380 has come on extremely fast for us in terms of cabin reconfigurations, more than anyone expected," said Valerie Manning, vice president of Upgrade Services.

A4A warns that higher fuel costs pressure airline margins
Summer travelers may face an increase in fares this year. Airfares for 2012 are up by around 9%, according to Airlines for America. "You know the airlines in 2011, eked out a 0.3 percent profit margin," said John Heimlich, chief economist for the A4A. "It's hard to see that revenues are in great excess of the cost of operation."
