Hospitals should rethink ionization for fighting legionella, CDC says
A Department of Veterans Affairs hospital in Pittsburgh and other facilities use an ionization system to avert Legionnaires' disease outbreaks, according to this article. But officials with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention call chlorinated products "the best strategy" for fighting legionella, rather than ionization technology, which the Pittsburgh hospital adopted nearly 20 years ago. "Other hospitals with [ionization] systems should carefully review their continued usage of this system," CDC spokeswoman Alison Patti said. Pittsburgh Tribune-Review
Group: EU fund would run counter to Environmental Liability Directive
A proposed EU fund to cover losses and liability related to industrial pollution incidents would be "contrary" to the Environmental Liability Directive's polluter-pays principle, according to the Federation of European Risk Management Associations. "It is even likely to work against the process of risk management, rather than encouraging companies to take responsibility for the consequences of their own activities," Pierre Sonigo, the organization's secretary general, said in a statement.
