Too little sleep raises stroke risk in middle age
People aged 45 and older who get less than six hours of sleep every night have a fourfold higher risk of suffering a stroke, a three-year study found. The findings, based on 5,666 normal-weight people without a history of stroke, were presented at the Associated Professional Sleep Societies meeting. More U.S. children develop type 1 and type 2 diabetes
The number of U.S. children with type 1 and type 2 diabetes grew 23% and 21%, respectively, between 2001 and 2009, according to a study presented at the American Diabetes Association meeting. More children with type 2 diabetes had protein in their urine than those with type 1 diabetes, indicating that they could be at higher risk of kidney damage, researchers noted. Self-injury among children may start as early as age 7
Researchers interviewed 665 children in the Denver area and central New Jersey and found that nearly 8% of the third-graders purposefully hurt themselves by cutting, burning or hitting themselves. CDC: Attempted suicides increase among teens

7 CMS pilot programs offer bonuses for care coordination
The CMS is sponsoring seven statewide regional programs as part of the Comprehensive Primary Care Initiative to promote partnerships between private and public payers. The service delivery model pilots will be supported by EHRs, and Medicare providers will receive bonus payments for care coordination. Report: U.S. hospitals work toward equal health care
Data from an American Hospital Association report showed 80% of U.S. hospitals translated health documents into languages most used by patients using standard methods, while 62% used interviews or surveys to collect data on patient satisfaction for serving diverse populations. Hospice nurse describes caring for dying son
New Jersey hospice clinical director Sharon Criscione found herself in the dual role of mother and nurse when her teenage son was diagnosed with a germ cell tumor and went into hospice care. She initially thought she should separate the roles but changed her mind. Sebelius: White House will "be ready" if health law is overturned
The Obama administration is confident that the Supreme Court will uphold the federal health care law, but the White House will be prepared if that's not the outcome, HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius says.
