Time Warner Cable, DIRECTV chiefs call for retrans changes
Congress and the Federal Communications Commission must reform the retransmission consent system by changing "outdated regulations that give numerous advantages to broadcasters" and as a result drive up the cost of TV for the public, Time Warner Cable CEO Glenn Britt and DIRECTV CEO Mike White write in an opinion piece. Retransmission fees increased from $215 million in 2006 to $1.5 billion in 2011, with broadcasters using "threats and blackouts of their stations to enforce their demands," they write. "If we all work together in the best interests of TV viewers, we can bring an end to broadcaster blackouts and return to enjoying the shows and the sports we all love," Britt and White write.
