Analysts: Big Data, innovations push analytics market ahead
Data-management and analytics innovations pushed the business-analytics software market upward by about 14% last year, according to research firm IDC, and compound annual growth is predicted to be 9.8% through the next four years. Enterprise needs concerning security and risk management, as well as regulatory compliance mandates, are the main drivers, IDC said. (U.K.)/IDG News Service (7/11)

Inventory glut, tablets affect PC shipments
The increasing popularity of tablets, bulging PC inventories and economic uncertainty in Europe are being cited as reasons that PC shipments declined 0.1% in the second quarter, according to a Gartner report. Hewlett-Packard remains the market leader with Lenovo in second place, while Acer pushed Dell out of its third-place ranking. "Consumers are delaying purchases, and vendors and retailers are slowing down their PC activities to clear existing inventories," said David Daoud, IDC's research director for personal computing.

Microsoft takes aim at competitors' customers
Microsoft says its Windows 8 virtual-desktop-infrastructure license strategy will help the company win over customers from competitors. "The customer is why we're here. Let's accelerate adoptions and eradicate Windows XP, lead customers into the cloud, leverage our strong R&D story, and we have to remember the customer is always right. They vote by what they buy," Chief Operating Officer Kevin Turner said at Microsoft's Worldwide Partner Conference 2012. (U.S.) (7/11),  The VAR Guy (7/11)

Laws, staffing can stem patent lawsuits, official says
Ramping up patent-office staffing and laws should help avert lawsuits and speed up the U.S. patent-filing process, acting Commerce Secretary Rebecca Blank says. "Higher-quality patents means less legal challenges. Faster patents [also] often mean less legal challenges, because oftentimes the longer it takes to get a patent the more other people are encroaching on the space, so speed and quality are two things I think this legislation and these new offices are going to help us achieve," Blank says.
