  • B-schools provide budding entrepreneurs with opportunities, funding
Many business schools offer programs that can help their students launch startups -- often before they even finish their studies. For example, at Harvard Business School, where about 5% of the 2011 graduates founded their own companies, more than $100,000 is available through entrepreneurship competitions. • Students brainstorm Web-based business ideas at Wharton workshop
Students at a workshop run by the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School learned the ins and outs of starting an Internet business from scratch and came up with concepts for new companies. For example, one business idea, called Chow4You, concentrated on helping users to pick out meals that meet their dietary requirements. "The workshop was focused on learning the steps to take to make a business viable, especially focusing on user experience, which I found to be the most important topic," said participant Rohan Mirchandani. • Harvard opens innovation lab
Harvard University has opened an innovation lab that includes meeting rooms and a workshop for testing out new ideas. Fifteen entrepreneurs have been enlisted to provide information about law, accounting and other matters important for launching new businesses. Those who use the lab are "under no pressure to commercialize an idea," said Joseph Lassiter, the lab's faculty chair. Harvard Magazine (1/2012) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
