Lugar's Indiana tour visits Albanese Confectionery Group
As part of Sen. Dick Lugar's "sweet jobs" tour in Indiana, the Republican visited Albanese Nut and Candy Co., which has 200 workers, in Hobart. The state has 18,000 confectionery, food and beverage manufacturing jobs, and Lugar is highlighting the need to eliminate the U.S. sugar program.

Retail sales gain, but average price slides
Analysis from Channel Intelligence shows that year-over-year retail sales increased 30% in the second quarter, but the average sale price dropped 15%. "The good news is that consumers are spending," said CEO Rob Wight. "But it is worth noting that they are buying less-expensive items. This might be an indicator of what spending habits will be like during the holiday season."

A coalition, including the American Heart Association, announced its campaign to reduce consumption of full-calorie beverages. The American Beverage Association's Chris Gindlesperger said, "People are drinking fewer full-calorie, sugar-sweetened beverages due to industry innovation in bringing no- and low-calorie beverages to the market."

Apples are an appealing, low-calorie snack
McDonald's this week began making apples standard with its children's meals, and while the fruit may not be a nutrient blockbuster, it has many appealing characteristics, such as soluble fiber and antioxidants, especially in the skin. Apples are likely to have high loads of pesticide residue, so organic versions may be a better choice, but nutritionists say the fruit still makes a great low-calorie snack that offers variety and easy storage.
