Air service to regional hubs continues to suffer
The lack of U.S. airline regulation has meant that regional hubs such as Pittsburgh, Cincinnati and St. Louis are being priced out of service from carriers focused on high-volume routes, according to a panel of transportation experts in Washington. Memphis, Tenn., is an example of a city that has seen a 25% decline in flights as well as increased ticket prices. In addition, the Essential Air Service program to guarantee service for small communities is facing opposition in Congress.

Bigger overhead bins are coming soon, airlines promise
U.S. carriers, including United and American Airlines, are retrofitting some of their narrow-body aircraft to expand overhead-luggage-bin capacity in response to increasing passenger frustration. As many airlines have moved to charge for checked luggage, the boarding process has become a negative experience for many travelers as they struggle to stow carry-on luggage and compete for space in bins.

Group launches app to identify racial profiling in screening
An iPhone application developed by a human-rights organization will allow travelers to report alleged racial and religious profiling at airport security checkpoints. The FlyRight tool was created by the Sikh Coalition, a civil- and human-rights organization. Federal officials have indicated that they will consider complaints made through the app as actionable complaints, and the app has been tested for compatibility with the government's system for complaints.

Airlines seek to shrink seat sizes and add legroom
New seat designs played a starring role at the Aircraft Interiors Expo as airlines seek to increase passenger comfort while still saving enough space to add a few extra seats to the cabin. The approaches vary from slimmer backrests that increase legroom to nonreclining seats that preserve passenger personal space to wider aisle seats that borrow space from their neighboring seats to create less of a pinched feel for travelers.

Hotels building customer loyalty through great service
To mark Customer Loyalty Month, a renowned hotel consultant has come up with a list of actions that he says hotels must perform to keep clients coming back. For instance, hoteliers should strive to make their guests feel special at every opportunity and deliver exceptional service quality to gain their loyalty, Shep Hyken notes. "Don't copy someone else's customer service strategy. Then you are just the same. Take what someone else has done and make it better -- make it your own," Hyken writes.

Bigger Brains Driven by Teamwork
Bigger Brains Driven by Teamwork
Scientists have discovered proof that the evolution of intelligence and larger brain sizes can be driven by cooperation and teamwork, shedding new light on the origins of what it means to be human. Researchers constructed computer models of artificial organisms, endowed with artificial brains, which played each other in classic games that mimic social interaction. Read more at the MPI site.
