Usage down for leading soybean producers
Crushing and exporting of soybeans in Argentina, Brazil and the U.S. declined in the first two months of 2013 compared with the year-ago period, according to Oil World. "Despite rapid harvesting of a record crop, Brazilian soybean crushings and exports were still down," Oil World said. GCEH acquires camelina-based biofuel producer
Global Clean Energy Holdings has acquired Sustainable Oils, a producer of camelina-based biodiesel fuel created in 2007 as a joint venture of Targeted Growth and Green Earth Fuels. GCEH paid Sustainable Oil's owners in stock and a promissory note. Sustainable Oils reported four-year camelina sales of more than $20 million before the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency approved camelina as a renewable fuel feedstock under the National Renewable Fuel Standard. European margarine group wants further cuts in trans fats
The International Margarine Association of the Countries of Europe is calling upon manufacturers of vegetable oils and margarine to further reduce the amount of trans fatty acids in products to less than 2%. The average amount of trans fat in margarine sold to food makers has already been reduced by 76% since 2004, the organization said. FoodNavigator (3/19)

Researchers say they've confirmed resveratrol mimics
Researchers say they have confirmed mimics for res­veratrol, the anti-aging mechanism in red wine. The technique focuses on sirtuin enzymes that many scientists believe are activated by resveratrol only in the presence of fluorescent substrates. "We hypothesized that the fluorescent groups were substituting for something natural in the body," said David A. Sinclair of Harvard Medical School, whose team identified substrates that resemble fluorophores. Chemical & Engineering News (3/11)

Study: Olive oil is more satisfying than butter, canola, lard
Olive oil was more effective than butter, lard or canola oil in producing a sense of fullness after eating, according to a study. "The olive oil group showed a higher concentration of the satiety hormone serotonin in their blood," said the study's leader, Peter Schieberle. The aroma of olive oil also was effective in making study participants feel fuller, researchers found. MedicalDaily.com (3/14)

FSMA meeting materials available
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration held meetings in Washington, D.C., on Feb. 28 and March 1 regarding the first two rules released under FSMA. FSMA, or the Food Safety Modernization Act, was signed into law in January 2011 and is still in the process of being implemented. Presentations from the meeting are available online. They concern the proposed rules for preventive controls in human food and produce safety standards.

This just plain sounds like a fun article from the Journal of Chemical Education. In it, author João Paulo André points out that opera can be used as a teaching tool for chemistry students and the public. (Digression: Did you know that composer Alexander Borodin (1833–1887) actually was a chemist who, among other discoveries, described the aldolic condensation?) For example, in "Antony and Cleopatra" by Samuel Barber, Cleopatra takes her own life by means of a bite from a poisonous snake, so André explains the chemistry of snake bites and venom. Other poisons used to further operatic high drama include rhubarb (oxalic acid), arsenic trioxide and radium (II) chloride. (If you guessed that the latter appears in Sikora’s "Madame Curie," you would be correct.)
