  • Women owners swell the ranks of franchisees
Men still own most U.S. businesses, but women are gaining fast when it comes to franchise ownership, according to the International Franchise Association. "If a woman decides that she’s going to sign up to be a franchisee in the restaurant business that is very competitive, then I know there is a tremendous amount of energy and confidence and sort of spunk that I have a true affinity for and a lot of respect for," Arby's President Hala Moddelmog said. • Business investment weakens amid uncertainty
Some of the nation's largest businesses are pulling back on investment plans as the "fiscal cliff" and economic uncertainty loom on the horizon. Meanwhile, smaller companies seem to be somewhat more optimistic than their larger cousins. "Their confidence is fair and reasonable," said Nicholas Pinchuk, CEO of automotive equipment maker Snap-on, speaking about the outlook of small businesses. "As you move up to bigger companies, their foresight becomes broader and their confidence starts to erode." The Wall Street Journal (11/18) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

  • CEOs urge Congress to address fiscal cliff, tax reform
More than 50 CEOs and senior executives of franchise companies, as members of IFA, recently called on Congress to address the impending fiscal cliff and to commit to produce a tax reform bill that lowers corporate and individual rates by a certain date, which would create greater long-term growth for the franchise industry. "Resolution of the impending fiscal cliff during the lame duck session is a necessity for businesses like ours dealing with the overwhelming uncertainty of our nation’s fiscal policy. Yet addressing the fiscal cliff is only the first step toward creating long-term growth for our industry. Congress should seize this opportunity and commit to produce a tax reform bill by a certain date," CEOs said in a letter delivered to all members of Congress. The franchise industry's letter was also quoted in Ways and Means Committee Chairman Dave Camp's "Tax Tracker" newsletter recently. LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
