- Cash-flush startups challenge RIM for device-management supremacy
A new generation of startups -- backed by a flood of venture capital -- is working to stake its claim in the market for mobile device management, a sector once dominated by a single company, Research in Motion. Companies such as MobileIron, AirWatch LLC, Zenprise and BoxTone are hoping to take advantage of RIM's delay in responding to the new demands of the sector, and they are finding the financial backing to make their move. The BlackBerry maker is not going out without a fight, however, and in April released a new suite of software, Mobile Fusion, designed to enable enterprises to manage mobile operating systems from Google and Apple. - Ciena introduces OneConnect virtual WAN software
Ciena Corp. is debuting a new suite of cloud-based virtual networking tools that the company says will simplify the deployment of applications and services over wide area networks. The company's new OneConnect Intelligent Control Plane -- which has already been chosen by Indiana Fiber Network for an upgrade to its backbone -- reduces latency by up to 30% and features new secure Optical Virtual Private Networks (O-VPN). The solution is optimized for stock market applications and synchronous virtual machine architectures, according to Jim Morin, a Ciena product line director. InformationWeek

- Malware jumps in Q1 as code writers target PCs, Android
The amount of malicious software targeting Macs, PCs and mobile devices increased during the first quarter of 2012, according to a new report from McAfee that predicts total malware could reach 100 million by the end of the year. The analysis discovered 83 million threats against PCs during the quarter, the highest level in four years, while the vast majority of the 8,000 total mobile malware samples McAfee collected during the quarter were directed at Google's Android platform. - SAP targets Oracle, Salesforce.com with cloud acquisition strategy
German software provider SAP announced it will shell out $4.3 billion to acquire Ariba, a developer of networking and online commerce solutions, as it seeks to advance its competitive standing in the growing cloud computing market and attempt to head off rivals such as Oracle and Salesforce.com. The deal, which values Ariba at nearly seven times what the company is forecast to be worth in 2013, is expected to close in the third quarter, but one industry observer says that timetable could be disrupted by a potential bidding challenge from Oracle.
