The increasing use of ransomware to extort payments from organizations is prompting Maryland lawmakers to consider legislation. A proposed bill would establish fines or prison terms of up to 10 years for ransomware perpetrators and allow damaged organizations to use civil suits to recover losses.
Connected medical devices face increased risks of being attacked with ransomware, says Marty Edwards of the Department of Homeland Security. This could be the year that devices are affected by something similar to the computer worm Stuxnet, putting patient data and organizations' operations at risk.
The Supreme Court has rejected Boston Scientific's appeal of a Maryland court's breach-of-contract judgment of $308 million against the company. Boston Scientific must pay the money to Mirowski Family Ventures to settle claims based on medical device patents.
Senate Health Committee Chairman Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn., and Ranking Member Patty Murray, D-Wash., along with four other high-ranking lawmakers have sent a letter to Congress affirming their support for the safety and efficacy of FDA-licensed vaccines. "As members of Congress, we have a critical role to play in supporting the availability and use of vaccines to protect Americans from deadly diseases," the legislators wrote.
Scientists from the University of Maryland School of Medicine and Rockville biotech firm Sanaria are working on a unique and promising malaria vaccine approach that injects trial patients with the parasite that causes the disease. "It's not the most conventional approach of immunization, but given the magnitude of the malaria problem, it's well worth pursuing," said Pedro Alonso of the World Health Organization.
A bipartisan bill was introduced in the Senate to implement a uniform FDA medical device inspections process that would set a time frame for foreign and domestic audits and require advance notification of records to be requested in an inspection, among other items.
Deven McGraw, deputy director for health information privacy at HHS' Office for Civil Rights, said the agency is expecting to release the draft rule for health care privacy breaches by the end of this year. The rule aims to compensate individuals whose health records have been breached and provide guidance on text messaging and social media use.
The Maryland Cybersecurity Range will open its new Baltimore training center in April. "The approach of realistic hands-on simulation is proving to be the most effective way to train and certify cyber security professionals," said Adi Dar, CEO of Cyberbit, one of the two companies heading up the effort.
