  • Clorox experiments with digital marketing
Clorox is taking advantage of a cheap digital-marketing sector and trying to directly connect with consumers. Its efforts have included a February flash sale on Facebook, and it is talking with online retailers about other projects. "The good news is that I don't have to make a $10 million to $100 million investment in [enterprise resource planning] systems. I can spend $200,000 and invest to learn," said Chief Information Officer Ralph Loura. The Wall Street Journal/CIO Report blog (4/3) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
  • Biobased glycols are gaining attention
Biobased glycols are gaining attention and investment beyond traditional sectors such as oleochemicals. DuPont and other companies are exploring biofuel uses, while Solvay already produces propylene glycol and epichlorohydrin at a plant in Thailand. "Bio-derivatives may not reach into every product slate in the petrochemical groups. But as the bio-derivative products filter into commercial markets, then competition and co-existence can be expected," predicts Judith Taylor. • ACI reaffirms triclosan safety as Canada scrutinizes its use
Canada released a draft assessment of triclosan on Saturday that affirmed its safety in humans while posing questions about its potential environmental effects. The assessment will lead to government talks with industry about potential voluntary reductions in its use. "A number of governmental bodies in the U.S. and around the world have determined the safe uses of triclosan and the products containing it; product manufacturers must abide by those safety rules," said Richard Sedlak, the American Cleaning Institute's senior vice president for technical and international affairs. The Food and Drug Administration and the White House have been clashing on numerous regulatory issues, this article details. "The politicization of the FDA could hurt not only consumer protection but industry profits as well," said Harvard University professor Daniel Carpenter. "If this trend continues, one could easily see major government purchasing programs in Europe, India, China and elsewhere saying, 'We're not going to follow FDA recommendations anymore.' " The New York Times (tiered subscription model) (4/2) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
