  Diabetes in Focus
  • Higher mortality risk seen in diabetes patients with CKD
An analysis in the Journal of the American Heart Association found chronic kidney disease was an important predictor of mortality in type 2 diabetes patients. Older patients, those with longer diabetes duration and those with higher blood pressure had the highest mortality risk, researchers said. • Study: Type 2 diabetes genes tied to colorectal cancer risk
Polymorphisms in LTA and CDKAL1 genes associated with type 2 diabetes appeared to have a gender-specific link to colorectal cancer, researchers reported in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism. Women with an LTA allele faced a lower risk of colorectal cancer, while men carrying the allele had an increased risk of the disease. The study also found men with a CDKAL1 allele were less likely to develop CRC, but women were not. Endocrine Today (4/12) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
  • Review looks at metformin's efficacy in diabetes
Metformin treatment did not show significant effects in cardiovascular or all-cause mortality in diabetes patients, a review in PLoS Medicine found. However, Dr. Vivian Fonseca, president for medicine and science at the American Diabetes Association, criticized the methodological quality of the meta-analysis. • Eating nuts might lower BMI and diabetes risk
People who regularly eat tree nuts -- almonds, cashews, hazelnuts and others -- have a lower body mass index and a smaller waist size and are less likely to develop heart disease, type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome compared with non-eaters, according to a study published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition. • Data drive efforts for better, lower-cost health care
More health care players are turning to data analysis in an effort to bolster care while lowering costs. Insurers are working to identify patients who will incur high medical costs, and pharmacy benefit managers are developing programs to monitor treatment adherence. Health care providers, meanwhile, use data to determine the likelihood of hospitalization among patients and to enhance preventive care.
