  • Pre-surgical nasal ointment helps prevent SSIs
Applying 5% povidone-iodine ointment to both nostrils in the two hours before surgery may be an alternative to a five-day pre-surgical course of mupirocin ointment to prevent Staphylococcus aureus and other deep surgical site infections, according to a study presented at IDWeek 2012. Researchers noted fewer adverse events and fewer patient reports of an "unpleasant" application in the povidone-iodine group compared with mupirocin group.
