Thailand rolls out smart classroom initiative
In Thailand, 40 schools are being outfitted with technology and other 21st century learning tools by Samsung as part of its smart classroom initiative. The programme is expected to be in place in 15 schools this year -- with the goal of furthering students' technology, language, problem-solving, collaboration and communication skills. New Zealand urged to mandate exercise in schools
In an open letter to a medical journal, researchers said current efforts to curb obesity in New Zealand do not go far enough and called for schools to make 90 minutes of weekly exercise mandatory in schools. Data, they said, show that three 30-minute sessions of moderate physical activity each week would make an impact. Stuff (New Zealand)/The Press (05 Aug.)

New Zealand school reconsiders plans for student microchip bracelets
After receiving criticism from parents, a New Zealand primary school is reconsidering a plan to use microchip bracelets as part of its good behaviour programme. The program calls for teachers to use scanners to give students points for good behaviour, which would be tracked electronically and eventually turned in for a reward.
