  • Panetta: Pentagon's shipbuilding, construction projects threatened
U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta has written a letter to two senators warning of the consequences of the maximum 23% cut in defense spending if the congressional supercommittee fails to trim the federal budget. "Such a large cut, applied in this indiscriminate manner, would render most of our ship and construction projects unexecutable -- you cannot buy three-quarters of a ship or a building -- and seriously damage other modernization efforts," Panetta wrote. • Lawmaker: Stalemate over union issue may lead to FAA shutdown
A labor provision in the Federal Aviation Administration reauthorization bill could lead to another shutdown of the agency, says Sen. Jay Rockefeller, D-W.Va., chairman of the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee. Republican lawmakers support a provision that would overturn a National Mediation Board rule allowing airline and railroad employees to form unions by a simple majority vote. Rockefeller said House Republicans refuse to compromise on the provision, but a spokesman for Rep. John Mica, R-Fla., chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, says he continues to be willing to compromise on all aspects of the bill. Saudi Arabian Airlines has signed an agreement at the Dubai Airshow with Rolls-Royce for Trent 700 engines. The contract for the engines is valued at $500 million. "The Trent 700 is a market leader, and in the Middle East it is the engine of choice for eight out of the 11 operators of the Airbus A330, powering three-quarters of the aircraft in service," Rolls-Royce executive Phil Harris said. • New rule allows European airports to use scanners
A new rule passed by the European Commission this week will allow European airports to replace metal detectors with scanners capable of detecting plastic explosives. The scanners display a picture of the traveler's body, but new rules require the individual's face to be blurred. Eventually the scanners will display a generic image. The rule will "ensure that where this new technology is used it will be covered by EU-wide standards on detection capability as well as strict safeguards to protect health and fundamental rights," EC Transport Commissioner Siim Kallas said. In a few short days the supercommittee will release their long-anticipated recommendations on how to meet objectives outlined in the Budget Control Act.
