  • Health care groups submit stage 2 MU comments
    Several health care groups beat the May 14 deadline to comment on the proposed rules for the second stage of meaningful use. The Federation of American Hospitals, which sent letters to the CMS and the ONC, asked the ONC to ensure the EHRs it evaluates and certifies for its initiatives are able to create the quality reports needed to satisfy HHS's MU requirements. The American Medical Association and the Medical Group Management Association urged the CMS to match the rewards and noncompliance penalties for meaningful use with those for the CMS e-prescribing and physician quality reporting programs.   • Records group calls for changes in MU reporting process
    The Electronic Health Records Association has called on the federal government to modify the timetable that eligible health care providers use in reporting their stage 2 meaningful use compliance. Using a three-month or six-month reporting period instead of a full year will give physicians and hospitals more time to become familiar with their new systems and make needed changes, the association said.     A patent has been granted to Richard Deutsch of Annapolis, Md., for the Sage-Hands Hygiene Monitoring System, which uses capacitive touch technology to monitor the hand hygiene of health care workers. The device can identify the exact point in time a health care worker had physical contact with a patient or a patient's related health devices and displays the caregiver's hand hygiene status on a screen similar to an iPad.   • Messaging system gives updates to families during surgery
    The Children's National Medical Center has collaborated with e3DataSolutions to design MyCareText, a cloud-based system in which hospitals can update the loved ones of surgery patients via text messages. The HIPAA-compliant mobile messaging technology, which was launched at the children's hospital last week, also allows staff members to send messages to patients informing them about things they cannot do before their procedures, such as eating or drinking.
