  • One U.S. state's long road to olive oil
Farmers in the state of Georgia have long looked for alternative crops in response to a changing climate, and after years of false starts, olives might provide the answer, according to this article. Olive Oil Times (10/31) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
  • Experts protest possible suspension of India biotech crop trials
Biotechnologists, agricultural scientists and agribiotech industry leaders criticized the recommendation of a court-appointed panel to suspend trials and commercialization of biotech crops in India for 10 years. The ban could hurt Indian farmers the most as they need to boost food production to meet the needs of the growing population, the scientists said. The recommended moratorium and dismissal of safety data are not based on science, said the former director of the Indian Institute of Science. • Antarctic conservation efforts falter
Efforts to set up marine protected areas off Antarctica stalled as the 25-member Commission for the Conservation for Antarctic Marine Living Resources failed to act during its annual meeting, Reuters reports. It is the CCAMLR that sets limits for the krill fishery. Krill -- the tiny, shrimplike creatures at the base of the marine food chain -- are an important source of omega-3 fatty acids. "CCAMLR members failed to establish any large-scale Antarctic marine protection at this meeting because a number of countries actively blocked conservation efforts," said Steve Campbell of the Antarctic Ocean Alliance, an international coalition of environmental and conservation groups. CCAMLR will hold a special session in Germany in July 2013 to try to break the stalemate. LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
