  Wound Care Update
  • Advances in dressings help keep burn patients out of hospitals
Burn-related hospitalizations and mortality have decreased over the past decade, according to the American Burn Association, due in part to new dressings that need to be changed less frequently, early debridement and more outpatient burn clinics. Burn dressings are now infused with time-released antibiotics and anti-microbial silver, and they do not stick and cause extra pain when they are changed. • Study confirms utility of maggots to clean some wounds
Dressings containing about 80 maggots provided faster debridement for nonhealing venous leg ulcers than surgical debridement without any increased pain or discomfort, according to a 119-patient study published in the Archives of Dermatology. Patients getting maggot therapy required 10 minutes of care twice a week, compared with 40 minutes three times a week for surgical debridement, but wounds healed in about the same length of time in both groups. The FDA has granted Devon Medical Products 510(k) clearance to market extriCARE 2400, a pump system that uses negative pressure to treat a variety of wounds as well as diabetic and pressure ulcers, flaps and grafts.
