  • Digital drives growth at holding companies
The world's five largest agency holding companies outperformed the U.S. ad-spending market because of their direct involvement in digital media, per a Pivotal Research study. WPP, Omnicom, Publicis, Interpublic and Havas together gained 6.1% in U.S. ad revenue last year, about twice the rate of the market's ad spending. • ICANN head pledges reforms
The chairman of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers said the organization would review its conflict-of-interest policies in the wake of a controversy over a past chairman. ICANN came under criticism after it was revealed that former Chairman Peter Dengate Thrush had a role at a firm that stood to benefit from the planned expansion of top-level domains. Recently, the U.S. National Telecommunications and Information Administration, a U.S. Department of Commerce agency, rejected an ICANN request to continue oversight of the system by which Internet domain names and numbers are assigned. • Yahoo! sues Facebook over advertising patents
Yahoo! is suing Facebook, claiming the social network is using Yahoo!'s patented technology to run its site -- including serving up tailored advertising to its users. The tech giant is accusing Facebook of violating 10 different patents covering methods for preventing "click fraud," as well as user-privacy and targeting technologies. "If what Yahoo! is saying is literally true, then it seems like a lot of companies would be liable," said intellectual property expert Shubha Ghosh. • Can Facebook takes ads mobile without annoying people?
Facebook's push into the mobile-ad market is a calculated gamble, industry watchers say, with the social network betting that it can serve up on-the-go ads without annoying users. Marketers are eager to test out mobile ads on Facebook, but that could backfire if users feel swamped by commercial messages. "The biggest potential problem is: Will users be overwhelmed with ads?" says Debra Aho Williamson. Bloomberg (3/13) LinkedInFacebookTwitterGoogle+Email this Story

  • BBH Labs courts controversy with "homeless hotspots"
An advertising stunt and not a hot new interactive service is the talk of the South by Southwest Interactive festival. BBH Labs deployed a team of homeless people in Austin, Texas, (in partnership with a local shelter) to tote around 4G MiFi, creating temporary hotspots for festival attendees. Many bloggers wrote that they thought the effort was crass and exploitative. Mitchell Gibbs, director of the local shelter disagreed, saying: "It's an employment opportunity, regardless of who is offering it."
