- Fort Worth layoffs to start in mid-Dec., American Airlines says
On Friday, several months after announcing plans to close its Fort Worth, Texas, maintenance facility, American Airlines told the Transport Workers Union it will cut 1,090 jobs from the facility starting Dec. 15. The airline -- which filed for bankruptcy protection last November -- said it will either "outsource the work done at Alliance [Airport] or shift it to facilities at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport and Tulsa." AA also said Monday that it will cut 839 of the more than 5,000 maintenance jobs at its Tulsa site. Tulsa World (Okla.)

- Neb. nuclear plant prepares for maintenance shutdown
The Nebraska Public Power District is taking the necessary safety measures ahead of the scheduled shutdown of its Cooper nuclear plant in Brownville for repair and upgrades. The utility developed a mock-up reactor and drywell to prepare its workers for the maintenance activities. "We built this mock-up so that our workers can come in, ... practice the assembly and disassembly of these units [and] see what the physical restrictions in the spacing [are] so that we can determine the best plan of how to get people in and out, get the matter in and out," said Jeff Wagner, project manager. - CN plans $12M expansion of British Columbia locomotive shop
Canadian National plans to invest $12 million in the expansion and development of its Locomotive Reliability Centre in Prince George, British Columbia. "We are at maximum capacity at the LRC, with three shifts per day, seven days a week, and we need to expand it to handle existing and projected growth of intermodal, coal and other traffic in northern B.C.," said Keith Creel, CN executive vice president and chief operating officer. - Autonomous platforms could reduce maintenance staff for drones
The Air Force has called the manning of unmanned platforms "its most critical staffing problem," according to a recent Defense Science Board study. The study examines the advantages of autonomous military platforms, and compares the number of personnel required to operate two unmanned aerial vehicles used by the Air Force. "Maintenance accounts for the biggest share" of employees needed to keep both vehicles in the air, the report says. Time.com

Pharma & Biotech SIG requests participation for an Autoclave data call
The Failure Mode, Effect and Criticality Analysis/ Reliability Centered Maintenance (FMECA/RCM) SubTeam of the Pharma & Biotech SIG is collecting non-proprietary data about specific pharmaceutical/biotechnology equipment to enhance the FMECA/RCM analyses and preventive maintenance programs of all interested companies. The first effort is to focus on the Autoclave. We are asking all SMRP companies and participants to share their autoclave maintenance with the SubTeam. Please send in maintenance plans for autoclaves or FMECA/RCM analyses on all autoclaves in any format, with Excel as the preferred format.
