- Report: Human element remains a major security challenge
Human error remains the top factor in network security, a CompTIA study says, adding that security challenges are getting more complicated thanks to social networking, mobile devices and cloud computing. These will require enterprises to boost training and awareness, CompTIA says. "The way they've thought about security in the past is to purchase a firewall or antivirus software or other product. But there's not a product that can help with end-user awareness. It really requires a commitment to training and education," said Seth Robinson, CompTIA's director of technology analysis. CertMag.com

- IDC: Need for mobility will drive IT spend upward
The increasing need for mobility is expected to be a main driver spurring IT spend next year, according to research from IDC predicting global tech expenditures will increase 5.7%. Emerging markets may have even healthier growth numbers, as IDC expects tech spend to rise 8.8% in those regions. Network World

- Analysts: Server market didn't hurt Dell or Cisco in Q3
Server revenues dipped in the third quarter, but Dell and Cisco experienced sales gains and market-share growth; competitors including IBM and Hewlett-Packard didn't fare as well, according to research firms Gartner and IDC. An MBA can help tech executives, but it may not guarantee a fast track to a promotion or higher salary, experts say. "We're seeing in many cases a lot of less technical but very business savvy CIOs being hired, and the MBA is a very strong lead for companies that are looking for a business-savvy approach to technology," says Jack Cullen of IT staffing specialist Modis. Cullen says tech pros who aren't interested in moving into the business side of the enterprise may not find the advanced degree as useful. Network World
