    BNSF says Steve Bobb will take over as chief marketing officer and executive vice president on Jan. 15. He will oversee economic development and business unit activities and be responsible for marketing, sales and customer service. The Class I also promoted Katie Farmer to group vice president of consumer products and Steve Branscum as group vice president of the coal business group.   • UP to upgrade lines in Ill., Colo.
    UP will spend $5.4 million to replace ties, spread ballast and renew grade crossing surfaces on its Illinois line between North Lake and Northbrook. It also intends to invest $7.5 million for work on a line between Deer Trail, Colo., and the Colorado/Kansas border. Both projects should be completed by the end of the year.   • FRA: Rail safety records continue to post positive changes
    The number of train accidents between January and August dropped 15.2% from year-ago levels, reflecting continuous progress in the rail industry's safety efforts, according to the Federal Railroad Administration.
