Fashion designers who want to make a splash on Twitter are often delegating the chore of maintaining a personality and presence to communications personnel. Erika Bearman, @OscarPRGirl on Twitter, is the director of communications for fashion house Oscar de la Renta, and she has amassed a Twitter following of more than 14,000 who tune in to news about the designer and to get dish on the world of fashion. - Report shows new interest in video among users, marketers
Newspaper websites in the second quarter tallied a 65% increase in video viewing that was fueled in part by concerns over the Gulf of Mexico oil spill, Brightcove and TubeMogul are reporting. The number of users who screened video clips on all sites during the period also increased on average by 2.8% a month and the number of clips went up 11%. Meanwhile, six in 10 brand managers intend to boost spending for online video over the next 12 months, and seven in 10 will include mobile video in their marketing plans. - Demand for cell phone apps is low
Just one-third of adults has a mobile phone with apps, according to a report from The Pew Research Center's Internet & American Life Project and The Nielsen Co. "This is the early stage of adoption when many cell owners do not know what their phone can do," said Kristen Purcell, the Pew Internet Project's associate director for research. - Will Google's social tool hurt friendship with Facebook?
Google chief executive Eric Schmidt has made official what has been rumored for months: The online giant is adding a "social layer" to its online search, video and mapping offerings. Schmidt, who was speaking to a group of reporters in Arizona, would not provide any details for the social initiative, which is thought to put Google in direct competition with Facebook. - Report: Bing surpasses Yahoo! in U.S. search
Microsoft's Bing has taken over second place from Yahoo! among U.S. search engines, Nielsen is reporting. Bing in August had 13.9% of searches, compared with 13.1% for Yahoo! Google remained in first place with 65% of all searches. Mediaweek

- Honda goes virtual with brochure for new CR-Z
American Honda Motor Co., in a trial that eventually could be extended across its entire vehicle line, is promoting its new CR-Z hybrid with a digital-only brochure, instead of the traditional paper version. The virtual brochure can be viewed on desktop or laptop computers, mobile phones and the iPad, with the latter edition offering interactive touch-and-swipe features.
