- Group finds remnants of jar that could have been Earhart's
The International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery has found pieces of glass that could indicate Amelia Earhart crash-landed on a southwest Pacific island. The group uncovered remnants of a glass jar that may have contained freckle cream on Nikumaroro Island. "[I]t's well documented Amelia had freckles and disliked having them," a researcher from the group told Discover News. AVweb

- AOPA will host International Learn to Fly Day on Saturday
The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association is hosting International Learn to Fly Day in Frederick, Md., on Saturday. The event, at Frederick Municipal Airport, will include free flights for children, aircraft displays and information on flight schools. "It's a very reachable goal. - FAA seeks to explore NextGen incentives
The Federal Aviation Administration was scheduled to hold a public meeting this week for input on offering incentives to outfit aircraft with NextGen equipment. The incentives would apply to commercial and general aviation aircraft. "The FAA is examining various methods of reducing the government's risk and determining the extent of industry interest in the program," the FAA said. Aviation Daily

- Welsh teen earns private pilot's license
Welsh teenager Jonathan Downing, 17, has earned his private pilot license after two years of flying lessons. Downing's interest in flying was sparked when he purchased a flight simulator for his computer, and then a family member gave him a flying lesson for Christmas. - Pa. airport will honor Tuskegee Airmen this weekend
Allegheny County Airport in Pennsylvania this weekend will honor the Tuskegee Airmen, the first black pilots to serve in the U.S. military, during World War II. "I think it was the experience of the Tuskegee Airmen, and their success, that convinced President [Harry] Truman to desegregate the armed services in 1945," said Wendell Freeland, 87, a pilot who trained to be a Tuskegee airman. - Embry-Riddle, ITT Exelis partner on new flight-tracking system
Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Fla., will partner with ITT Exelis to build a new flight-tracking system. "We have a relatively recent Ph.D. program in aviation and we believe that having this data would help their research as they get to the dissertation stage," said Steve Hampton, associate dean for research at Embry-Riddle's College of Aviation.
