  • Kindle Fire loses steam as iPad's market share increases
The market share of Apple's iPad increased by 13 percentage points in the first quarter to 68%, while the market share for Amazon's Kindle Fire shrank from 17% in the fourth quarter to 4% in the first quarter, IDC says. Analysts cited common "fatigue"-related slips six months after a product's debut, the iPad's huge overseas reach and Kindle's U.S.-only presence. Overall tablet sales more than doubled from a year ago to 17.4 million units, but were lower than analysts had expected. In another report, NPD DisplaySearch predicted that Windows 8 will gain only a modest share of the tablet market before 2015. • Number of U.S. TV households slips again, Nielsen reports
The number of television households in the U.S. is forecast by Nielsen to be 114.1 million next year, down from 114.7 million in 2012, representing the second straight year that figure has declined. The market research firm said the decline reflects changes in U.S. census data and the increasing use of other electronics products for watching TV programs. Nielsen also reported that Americans watch an average of almost five hours of video each day, with 98% of that seen on TV sets, and that 80.2 million U.S. homes have high-definition TVs, up 8 million from last year.
