  • Surgeons see much stronger demand for strong chins
Nearly 21,000 Americans received chin augmentations last year, a 71% increase in demand for the procedure over the prior year, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. "The biggest jump was in people over 40, which is the point where people are bridging the gap between youthfulness and middle age," said plastic surgeon Darrick Antell, a clinical professor of surgery at Columbia University. "They're getting loose skin under the jaw line, and a chin implant can make an immediate improvement." MSNBC/TODAY (4/15), HealthDay News (4/16) LinkedInFacebookTwitterGoogle+Email this Story
  • How his-and-hers plastic surgery happens
More couples are seeking plastic surgery together, though the procedures they want differ, plastic surgeons say. "Men are often initially introduced when they come in with their wives, who are looking at having this or that done," plastic surgeon Richard Chaffoo said. "When the husband is in there, he sees some of the information, and then he sort of gets interested." • Woman faces multiple operations to repair bogus buttocks lift
A woman who received buttocks enhancement from an unlicensed practitioner faces up to 20 surgeries that carry risks for her tissue, nerves and blood, says plastic surgeon Bart Rademaker. Bathroom caulk was injected in the woman's buttocks by a person wearing a white coat and badge marked "RN," according to this report. WFTS-TV (Tampa, Fla.) • HHS proposes changes for determining hospital wage index
HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius submitted to Congress a proposal that uses a method for taking commuting data into account when examining labor markets for Medicare's hospital wage index. The proposal would allow "a more up-to-date reporting system for collecting commuting data from hospitals ... so that the wage index calculations would actually reflect the commuting patterns of hospital employees," according to the HHS report. • Research and shop around before cosmetic procedures, experts warn
Examples of bad cosmetic surgery abound in Hollywood, and one casting director says she shies away from hiring actors who have had too much work done. For the best outcomes, potential patients should first ensure their doctor has hospital privileges and is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, says plastic surgeon Malcolm Roth, president of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.
