  • Chu, Sen. Udall to push for PTC extension during webcast today
Energy Secretary Steven Chu and Sen. Mark Udall, D-Colo., are scheduled to hold a webcast chat at 4 p.m. Eastern time today to discuss the importance of extending the wind-energy Production Tax Credit. Meanwhile, industry supporters are working behind the scenes to keep the PTC from lapsing at the end of the year. "There are a lot of quiet conversations," Udall said. • Iberdrola, Vattenfall plan 1,200-MW offshore wind farm in the U.K.
Spain's Iberdrola and Sweden's Vattenfall are proposing to develop a 1,200-megawatt offshore wind project in the U.K. The East Anglia One offshore wind project would be the initial phase of a facility that could deliver up to 7,200 MW, the company said. If approved, the project would be Iberdrola's "most ambitious," with construction expected to begin in 2016 and generation due two years later, the company added. • Brazil's WEG hopes to profit from local-content rules on turbines
Brazilian wind turbine maker WEG Electric is aiming to land a portion of the $7.6 billion in contracts that Brazil's government is planning to award to wind projects through 2020. WEG "is well-positioned because it has the technology and is 100% national," said Mario Bernardes, an analyst for Banco do Brasil, referring to development bank BNDES' requirement for local content. "Obviously, foreign companies have technology and that differential, but Weg has a positive perspective because of that government incentive." • AWEA's Gramlich: Sen. Alexander ignores PTC's economic benefits
Sen. Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn., ignores the economic benefits of the wind-energy Production Tax Credit in his calls for its repeal, writes Rob Gramlich, senior vice president for public policy at the American Wind Energy Association. Wind power development "has added billions of dollars of new investment into the nation's economy, provided local communities with millions in new-found tax revenue, and allowed electric utilities to lock in costs for years in advance and protect themselves and consumers against volatile fossil-fuel prices with a clean, affordable energy source," Gramlich states. • Idaho regulators issue rules on renewable-energy projects
The Idaho Public Utilities Commission has issued a ruling supporting the 100-kilowatt limit for wind and solar projects to qualify for contracts under the federal Public Utility Regulatory Policy Act. The PUC said the rule would stop developers from dividing up big projects into smaller ones, but wind-power advocates said it would have a chilling effect on the industry. Meanwhile, the PUC tossed out Idaho Power's request to have more leeway to curtail wind power output during off-peak periods.
