  • Parts of ACA may be permanent regardless of election outcome
If elected president, Mitt Romney may not have enough congressional support to fulfill his promise to repeal the Affordable Care Act, and even if Congress does repeal the law, some aspects are probably permanent. For example, the Romney administration could undermine health insurance exchanges by withholding subsidies, but privately run exchanges are already being formed and would continue to run. Moreover, many employers are likely to continue offering popular provisions, such as allowing employees to keep their adult children on their plans and covering preventive screenings. • Medicare nudges beneficiaries toward better-performing plans
Medicare officials are working to shift beneficiaries to better coverage by sending letters informing seniors whose plans were rated below three stars three years in a row of the low ratings. The letters were sent to about 375,000 Medicare Advantage members and 150,000 drug plan members, and plans have also been warned of possible future cancellation. • Cardiovascular polypill could boost adherence, lower costs
A pill that combines aspirin with a generic statin and two generic antihypertensive drugs increased adherence in a study of more than 2,000 people at risk for heart disease and already taking some type of medication. The patients given the polypill had greater reductions in blood pressure and cholesterol levels than those who bought the four drugs separately. The polypill was free to patients in the study group.
