- At the Exchange Conference: Get ready!
To be ready for the implementation of health insurance exchanges, insurers must focus on market, strategic and operational preparedness, Deloitte Consulting's Alison Hagan said at the AHIP Exchange Conference held in conjunction with AHIP's Institute 2012. That entails getting organized for strategic readiness, market assessment and selection for market preparedness, and conducting an internal evaluation for operational and technical readiness, Hagan said, adding that flexibility is essential to meeting these challenges. - Panelists: Private exchanges will flourish
Panelists at AHIP's Institute 2012 predicted that in addition to government-supported exchanges, development of private exchanges would accelerate under a ruling upholding the Affordable Care Act. "I see hundreds of these exchanges developing. The floodgates will open," said Sanjay Singh, CEO of health care technology provider hCentive. Attorney Chris Condeluci anticipated that under the ACA, states would partner with private exchanges. HealthLeaders Media

- Patients embrace technology for self-management of care
Ninety percent of American patients surveyed prefer using the Internet, e-mail and mobile devices to better manage their health and handle certain services, including making appointments and ordering prescription refills online, according to a survey by Accenture. Researchers also found that 83% of patients wanted online access to their medical records, while 85% would like to retain physician interaction. "Patients want more options, so they can make their own choices," writes Kaveh Safavi of Accenture. The findings were presented at AHIP's Institute 2012. Forbes

- Technology is there to improve delivery, panelists say
Technology is ready for overhauling the delivery system, but people and institutions won't be able to utilize it without taking some risks, said panelists at AHIP's Institute 2012. Using the home as a prominent setting for health care is possible, but the process must be streamlined for doctors and patients, panelists said. FierceHealthIT

- Insurers must reach out to consumers, marketer says
As people increasingly buy health insurance policies on an individual basis, insurers need to shift to a more consumer-oriented sales model, said Lindsay Resnick of the KBM Group. Conversely, consumers also will be reaching out to insurers, Resnick said, as they shop for policies. Insurers that are prepared to engage consumers in that dialogue stand to gain the greatest share of new customers, he said. Healthcare Payer News
