  • New sunscreen labeling rules go into effect June 18
The makers of sunscreen and cosmetics that contain sunscreen are launching newly labeled products to comply with FDA regulations. Sunscreens labels will list active ingredients, and the "broad spectrum" label will be reserved for products that pass a test showing they protect against both ultraviolet-A and ultraviolet-B rays. Though some cosmetics contain sunscreen, dermatologic surgeon Neil Sadick said people should use enough sunscreen daily to fill a shot glass. Mycobacterium massiliense is an emerging pathogen that should be suspected in skin and soft tissue infections that do not respond to antibiotics, according to a case study presented at the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery's 2011 meeting. The pathogen is resistant to some chemicals used to sterilize surgical instruments and has been traced to contaminated medications, footbaths, spa beds, tattoo dyes and surgical marking pens, the study authors said.
