- Aon report: Self-insuring of physicians brings risks, benefits
An increase in the number of hospital-employed physicians can bring more medical-liability risks to hospitals, but the shift also carries benefits, according to a study by Aon and the American Society for Healthcare Risk Management. Cost savings can result, and "hospitals can jointly defend claims, rather than a situation where there is fighting between the hospital's point of view versus the physician's," says Erik Johnson of Aon Actuarial Group. - Survey: Employers to continue benefits but shift approach
A recent Aon Hewitt survey shows that among large and midsize employers, 94% plan to continue offering health benefits for their employees for the next three to five years. However, 37% of employers plan to change their approach in offering coverage, moving from the "managed trend" to a "house money/house rules" approach, which includes actions such as lowering premiums or giving broader coverage in exchange for taking biometric screenings or answering health risk questionnaires. "Employers are staying in the game, but they are taking bold and assertive steps to achieve more effective results," said Aon Hewitt Executive Vice President John Zern. Employee Benefit News

- Union deal at Mich. university draws lawmaker scrutiny
A tentative deal on an eight-year contract has been reached between Wayne State University and its faculty and staff union. Union President and professor Charles Parrish called the contract fair. "Tenure, job security and academic freedom have been preserved. This will allow our faculty to continue their excellent work in teaching and research," he said. However, some Michigan lawmakers say the contract may be an attempt to circumvent the state's right-to-work law that goes into effect on March 27 and will prevent unions from requiring dues from employees. - Judge: Lawsuit on proposed NYU campus expansion can proceed
A New York City judge has allowed a lawsuit against a proposed expansion of New York University's campus to proceed. Plaintiffs allege collusion between the university and the city to prevent some parcels of land from being used as parks. City Councilwoman Margaret Chin said the expansion, which has been scaled back from what was originally proposed, is necessary to accommodate the university's growth.
