  • MSNBC partnership between Microsoft and NBC ends
MSNBC.com, the news site created in the 1990s by NBC and Microsoft, rebranded itself Sunday as NBCNews.com, marking the end of the joint venture between the TV network and the software giant. Comcast, which owns NBC, is said to be paying about $300 million to Microsoft, which dissolved its stake in the MSNBC cable channel in 2005, for Microsoft's 50% stake in the website. Wireless-device owners who subscribe to a telecom, cable or satellite pay-TV service will be able to get live, free streams of NBC's coverage of the London Olympics via a pair of applications from Adobe Systems, the companies said Thursday. • Pilot projects tap white space to expand broadband's reach
The best solution for a spectrum crisis may be the unlicensed bandwidth unused between broadcast television channels, but don't call it Wi-Fi, Craig Settles writes. Experts such as Wi-Fi Alliance CEO Edgar Figueroa say that white-space spectrum is a robust solution for bringing broadband to underserved communities, but referring to it as Super Wi-Fi, as some providers do, is potentially misleading since the technologies actually have little in common. It's undeniable how big a part of all of our businesses the digital properties are going to be. We think we have a much better opportunity to shape them, and frankly grow the news division over all, if we have direct control over all of it."
