  • Ericsson reportedly is in talks to buy Microsoft's MediaRoom business
    Ericsson is reportedly in negotiations with Microsoft to acquire the software giant's Internet Protocol television unit. The acquisition of the MediaRoom unit would help propel Ericsson into a more competitive position in the growing market for IPTV products and services.   • Tax credit will allow Verizon to add 500 jobs at Ohio site
    Ohio tax authorities have cleared the way to bring hundreds of additional jobs to a data center complex that Verizon Communications owns. Employees at two Verizon Wireless offices will relocate to the facility next year. The Ohio Tax Credit Authority on Monday approved a 10-year, 70% credit for the wireless unit's Cellco Partnership affiliate for an expansion that will add 500 jobs to the 1,500 already planned for the Hilliard site.   • EU proposes that all new buildings get broadband infrastructure
    The European Commission on Tuesday published a draft proposal that called for all new buildings, as well as those under major renovations, to be outfitted with "high-speed-ready in-building physical infrastructure."   • Researchers propel data at near-light speed using hollow cores
    Researchers at the University of Southampton in the U.K. have devised a method for transmitting data at 99.7% of the speed of light by using specially designed hollow-core optical glass fibers. The data speeds, which are significantly higher than earlier capacities of 70% of light speed, could cut the time it takes to transmit data from Australia to the U.S. by 13 milliseconds and lead to lower latency transmissions for high-bandwidth applications such as gaming.   • Senate bill would promote the use of telehealth technology
    Sens. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., and John Thune, R-S.D., have introduced the Fostering Independence Through Technology Act, a bipartisan bill to promote the use of remote monitoring technology in the Medicare program. The bill calls on the Department of Health and Human Services to create pilot telehealth projects. "Not only could this new technology reduce costs and improve health outcomes, but it also offers patients the individual freedom to stay in their homes, reducing costs associated with nursing homes and long-term care facilities," Thune said.
