- Bankruptcy can't keep Rocketplane from the moon
What remains of aerospace company Rocketplane Kistler, formally based in Oklahoma City, was sold at auction for $25,000, but company officials say their goal is still the moon. "We have programs we're hoping to resurrect," said CEO George French. "I was the biggest funder of the project before. I don't have any money now. - Wash. airport to update master plan
Pierce County is set to update the master plan for Tacoma Narrows Airport in Gig Harbor, Wash. "The master plan process is an opportunity for the community to develop a vision for the airport to meet its needs for transportation, recreation and jobs," said Deb Wallace, Pierce County Public Works and Utilities airport and ferry administrator. - Helicopter industry still working to improve safety

- Algae research offers promise for bio-based chemical precursors
Researchers at the University of California, Davis, reported that they have genetically modified blue-green algae to produce chemicals that can be easily turned into biofuels and other bio-based products. The researchers successfully produced 2.4 grams of 2,3 butanediol per liter of growth medium from the algae, the biggest yield so far for bacteria-derived chemicals. United Press International

- Fla. pilot recognized for safety
George Karamitis of Avon Park, Fla., will be recognized with the Master Pilot Award at this year's U.S. Sport Aviation Expo in Sebring. Karamitis began his career as a child in a J-3 Cub and later flew in the U.S. Navy and for Trans World Airlines, while staying active in general aviation. The Federal Aviation Administration presents the award to pilots who have maintained a safe flying record for 50 years. The Tampa Tribune (Fla.)

- Texas flight school earns private pilot certification
The Calhoun Air Center at Victoria Regional Airport in Texas was issued Part 141 certificate to teach a Federal Aviation Administration-approved standardized training syllabus for students hoping to earn a private pilot's license. The school is also working to earn Instrument and Commercial Part 141 approval as well as becoming certified by the Veterans Administration and Part 141 helicopter approval. General Aviation News

- FAA rule would prohibit pilots' in-flight use of personal devices
The Federal Aviation Administration is proposing a rule that would require pilots to turn off personal electronic devices in the cockpit during flights. However, pilots would still be able to use iPads or laptops issued for professional use. Airlines for America plans to review the proposal and may comment after looking at the proposed rule, a spokeswoman said. USA Today
