  • Ceva, Imagination engage in bidding war for MIPS assets
    Ceva is now offering $90 million to acquire the business operations of MIPS Technologies, along with a patent portfolio, Peter Clarke writes. That tops, for now, the $80 million bid by Imagination Technologies Group, which originally offered $60 million for the MIPS assets, only to see Ceva ring in with a $75 million bid.   • Most customers point to endurance of NAND flash, SSD survey finds
    More than three-quarters of respondents said the staying power of NAND flash memory devices is a key selling point for using solid-state drives in enterprises, according to a survey sponsored by Smart Storage Systems, an SSD supplier.   • DARPA gives $20M contract to Nvidia for embedded processor tech
    Nvidia received a five-year, $20 million contract from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency to develop extreme high-performance embedded processors that would be 75 times more energy efficient than existing embedded technology. Nvidia's next-generation "Maxwell" graphics processors are being designed to deliver 16 billion floating-point operations per second per watt; the DARPA project is aimed at producing a chip capable of 75 GFLOPS per watt.     Micron Technology is shipping 1-gigabit phase-change memories made with a 45-nanometer process in volume to Nokia for use in mobile phones, this article notes.   • Embedded graphics may not require the latest processors
    Engineers may be impressed with the most advanced CPUs combined with graphics processing units, but those chips may not be the best choice for design projects involving 2D graphics acceleration, according to Graeme Wintle of ByteSnap Design, a U.K.-based consulting firm.
