    Through Tuesday, 5,054 cases have been reported in this year's outbreak of the West Nile virus, the most for that period since 2003, CDC officials said on Wednesday.   • Physician guidelines cover research, industry collaborations
    Guidelines to help physicians decide whether to participate in medical research, education or industry collaborations were published by the Association of Clinical Researchers and Educators in the journal Endocrine Practice. The guidelines define "fair value" compensation, call for increased scrutiny in areas such as formulary committees and institutional review boards, and reject the term "conflict of interest" regarding physician disclosures.   • Studies assess tablet use among physicians
    A study of two Fairview Health Services emergency departments in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area showed responding physicians believe iPads can improve efficiency, while three general benefits -- improved patient interaction, smoother workflow and structural benefits such as ease of use -- were expected from iPad use. Another study found 90% of medical residents at Columbia University Medical Center used their tablets on rounds with attending physicians, while 18% reported using iPads for daily clinical work.   • Weight loss curbs inflammation markers in obesity
    A study presented at the American Heart Association meeting found both low-carb and low-fat diets helped reduce inflammation markers in participants who were obese and overweight.   • Standard anticoagulant dose not right for all patients
    Most patients taking the anticoagulants clopidogrel and prasugrel at standard doses may not be getting the right dose for themselves, according to a study presented at a meeting of the American Heart Association. For both drugs, only a quarter of patients were getting the proper dose.     The NIH's new ClinVar database integrates data from dozens of databases and allows clinical testing laboratories to deposit their data. The database describes diseases using standard nomenclature, allows data to be incorporated into other software and supports complex searches. "It provides a forum that is computer readable for people to develop tools to find connections between genetics and disease," said James Ostell, chief of the National Center for Biotechnology Information's engineering branch.   • Reports: New cholesterol drugs promising for hard-to-treat patients
    Studies presented at the American Heart Association conference showed new drugs in clinical trials may help lower cholesterol levels in patients who have not had success with or without statin medications. Researcher Dr. Evan Stein said reducing LDL cholesterol "is one of the cornerstones of decreasing the risk of cardiovascular disease," but there are not a lot of alternatives for people who cannot tolerate current medications or who receive no benefit from them.
