- HHS says fraud recovery efforts pay off
HHS and the Justice Department recovered $4.2 billion in the last fiscal year from people attempting to defraud Medicare and Medicaid, HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius and Attorney General Eric Holder announced. Each dollar spent over the past three years investigating fraud yielded $7.90, according to a joint report. Reuters

- Spending on health care rose 4.3% in 2012
Research by the Altarum Institute's Center for Sustainable Health Spending found that health care spending in 2012 went up 4.3%. "While slightly above the flat three-year experience of 3.9%, our data demonstrates continued historically low health care spending growth," Altarum's Charles Roehrig said. Health care prices rose the least since 1998, inching up 1.7% from December 2011 to December 2012. BenefitsPro.com

- Footnote in court brief hints at new FDA rules for generic warnings
The FDA may revise regulations so that makers of generic drugs can update labels to warn patients about risks, Ed Silverman writes. The Justice Department filed a friend-of-the-court brief in a case concerning generic drugs, and it carried this footnote: "This office has been informed that FDA is considering a regulatory change that would allow generic manufacturers, like brand-name manufacturers, to change their labeling in appropriate circumstances."
