- Experts: Cardiovascular fitness may explain "obesity paradox"
A growing body of scientific evidence is focusing on the "obesity paradox," a medical phenomenon wherein overweight and obese patients are less likely to die from heart disease, kidney disease, stroke, hypertension and diabetes than thinner people. It's possible genetics, metabolic changes or treatment differences play a role. However, cardiovascular fitness may ultimately be more important than weight, according to experts. - Cancer bumps heart disease as leading cause of death for Hispanics
Cancer is now the leading cause of death among Hispanics in the U.S., surpassing heart disease, according to the American Cancer Society. The greater availability of treatments such as statins has helped cardiovascular death rates fall faster than the rates for cancer, according to an epidemiologist with the American Cancer Society. However, researchers noted that cancer rates among Hispanics have fallen at a faster rate in the past decade than in non-Hispanics and that U.S. Hispanics tend to be younger, working-age adults, so the lower incidence of heart disease is not surprising. - ASNC signed on to letters to the House and Senate urging them to avoid Medicare budget cuts
The required 2% cuts to Medicare under the budget sequestration law would result in the loss of more than 700,000 jobs in the health care sector by 2021, according to a recent report, which forecasts the loss of 496,000 jobs in 2013 alone. Lawmakers hope the White House report detailing the exact nature of the budget cuts will spur Congress to reach an agreement to avert the cuts. ASNC signed a multi-society letter urging Congress to craft a legislative solution to avoid budget cuts that will negatively impact the economy and the health care system. Get more information and link to the letter, which was sent to both the House and Senate.
