- Obama leads Veterans Day ceremony at Arlington
President Barack Obama placed a wreath on the Tomb of the Unknowns in Arlington, Va., as part of a Veterans Day ceremony on Sunday. "Today, a proud nation expresses our gratitude, but we do so mindful that no ceremony or parade, no hug or handshake is enough to truly honor that service," Obama said. The event marked the first Veterans Day since the end of the war in Iraq. The Washington Post

- Iraq, Afghanistan vets win House seats
About two dozen veterans are joining or returning to Congress next year -- roughly the same number as before the election -- but a growing number of House veterans have served in Afghanistan and Iraq as opposed to World War II, Korea or Vietnam, according to this article. The Senate still has no veterans who served in Iraq or Afghanistan. Politico (Washington, D.C.)

- Calif. war memorial restored after long legal battle
Veterans advocates dedicated a war memorial cross Sunday to replace one that was removed by court order from a national park in California. The American Civil Liberties Union filed a lawsuit in 2001 arguing that the cross was a religious symbol on public land and therefore unconstitutional. A land swap was arranged so that the memorial now is on private land. The Washington Post

- Analysis: Optimism growing about possible sequester deal
Capitol Hill has become more optimistic since the elections that a deal can be reached to prevent sequestration from taking effect, this article says. President Barack Obama, in his victory speech, noted that he is "looking forward to reaching out and working with leaders of both parties" on urgent issues, while House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, said lawmakers "are ready to be led." Others in Washington have suggested that there is room for compromise, provided talks happen quickly. Defense News

- Companies help reduce veteran joblessness
The unemployment rate among post-Sept. 11, 2011, military veterans is higher than that of the overall population, but not by nearly as much as it was a year ago, John Zappe writes. Government efforts to incentivize the hiring of veterans are partially responsible for the improvement, but companies also deserve credit for hiring initiatives such as the 100,000 Jobs Mission, which involves pledges by a number of companies to hire 100,000 veterans by 2020. More work is needed, especially to help female vets, who have a harder time finding jobs than male vets do, Zappe writes. SourceCon

- Backlog of VA claims continues to grow
The backlog of disability claims awaiting processing by the Department of Veterans Affairs continues to expand, with more than 896,000 cases now pending. A weak economy, an influx of veterans returning from overseas and the increasing complexity of individual claims filed are among the causes of the caseload's growth. The Washington Post
