- Clinical documentation in EHRs must be addressed, AHIMA tells ONC
The quality and integrity of clinical data in EHRs need to be addressed now "before health information exchanges become widespread," AHIMA official Michelle Dougherty said in testimony before the ONC's HIT Policy Committee. To that end, the group offered four recommendations, starting with advancing data governance and management to ensure that information is being managed as an asset, and decision-making and oversight processes are pursued proactively. - Minn. health system uses data warehousing to reduce early-term births
The adoption of data warehousing and analytics has helped North Memorial Health Care in Minnesota decrease its rate of elective deliveries before 39 weeks' gestation by 75% in six months. - ONC voluntary guidelines for HIE will be issued soon
The ONC will release voluntary guidelines for health information exchange during the first half of 2013. Rather than a formal rule, the guidelines will allow for feedback and sharing of best practices in the health care community. The ONC will update guidelines periodically in an effort to "get something out to reduce uncertainty and let people know what we're thinking," according to ONC policy analyst Steve Posnack.
