- Mold remains a problem after Sandy
Mold-infested homes and businesses are still a problem months after superstorm Sandy inundated the East Coast. A $15 million public-private partnership aims to offset remediation expenses for 2,000 New York City homes, and some are calling for part of the $50.5 billion federal aid package to be earmarked for mold-eradication efforts. Mold, which poses health problems and can put residents out of their homes for days during remediation, is not specifically covered by the Federal Emergency Management Agency or a New York City emergency-repair program. - Angled green roof helps make Netherlands building sustainable
A green roof with an irregular pitch has helped a 62,400-square-foot building at the Amsterdam University College in the Netherlands achieve sustainability, according to this article. The structure sports sedums to add insulation, manage stormwater and control the indoor temperature. "The troughs of the tilted roof ... are set diagonally in relation to the rest of the rectangular floor plan, creating an eye-catching, open loft space on the top floor," writes Randy Woods.
