  • Biofuels industry slams report linking RFS to higher food costs
The Renewable Fuels Association and other biofuel industry groups have spoken out in defense of the Renewable Fuel Standard after the National Council of Chain Restaurants issued the results of a study attributing higher food costs to the standard. "According to [the Department of Agriculture] and the Department of Labor, annual food inflation in 2012 and 2013 will be right in line with the 20-year average. In fact, food inflation rates since the RFS was adopted in 2005 have, on average, been lower than they were throughout the 1980s and early 1990s," said RFA President and CEO Bob Dinneen in a statement. • Researchers get $2M federal grant to develop nonfood feedstocks
Colorado State University researchers secured a $2 million federal grant to develop a system for genetically modifying nonfood plants, such as sorghum, for biofuel production. "Right now, most of the fuel we produce in biofuels is from materials that can serve as food for humans and animals. What we'd like to do is move to a set of feedstocks that don't compete with animals and humans," said Eric Toone, deputy director of the Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy. • Poll: Advanced-biofuel execs believe federal support will stay
Most of the participants in last month's Advanced Biofuels Markets conference in San Francisco were optimistic that federal support for biofuels would be continued or increased in 2013, and that commercial-scale cellulosic ethanol production would be achieved next year, a survey showed. More than 67% of respondents believed that the Renewable Fuel Standard would stay in its current form through 2013, the poll showed. BiofuelsDigest.com (11/28) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
  Policy Watch
  • Senate votes to support Pentagon's advanced-biofuels drive
The Senate voted 62-37 to strike a provision in the defense appropriations bill that would have prohibited the Pentagon from buying alternative fuels if they were more expensive than conventional fuels. "Reports of the demise of biofuels' political currency appear to be premature. Americans clearly support reducing our dependence upon foreign oil and strengthening our national and economic security via domestic renewable fuels," said Bob Dinneen, president and CEO of the Renewable Fuels Association. • Defense Dept.'s biofuels program furthers energy security
Congress should support the U.S. military's biofuels program because it lessens the country's reliance on "oil from unstable and undemocratic countries," writes Paul Clarke, a senior adviser to the Truman National Security Project. The program was born from the realization by U.S. defense leaders that "reliance on oil is a major vulnerability," Clarke states. "Our military deploys troops and spends billions of dollars every year securing oil supply routes, and any rise in oil prices can leave the Defense Department on the hook for billions in costs," Clarke adds. • Output climbs at new Peruvian ethanol plant
Maple Etanol expects the 2012 output of its Peruvian sugarcane-to-ethanol plant, which went online in March, to total 11.5 million gallons. The plant sells up to 20% of its ethanol in the domestic market and has an offtake deal with Mitsui & Co. to sell the remainder to overseas markets, with initial shipments bound for Europe.
