    The number of babies born to 15- to 19-year-olds in 2011 was the lowest since the 1940s, with 31 births for every 1,000 teens, down 8% from 2010, CDC officials reported.   • Rural colon cancer patients have lower chances of survival
    Colon cancer patients in urban areas had a better chance of survival than their rural counterparts, according to an analysis of more than 123,000 cases in the California Cancer Registry.   • Gestational hypertension may affect child's cognitive abilities later
    Men born to mothers who had hypertension while pregnant had lower cognitive scores, especially in mathematical reasoning, at ages 20 and 69 compared with the control group, a Finnish study in the journal Neurology found. These adults experienced a greater decline in language skills, math reasoning and visual/spatial relationships by age 69 than men born to mothers without hypertension during pregnancy.   • Study: Eating fish is better than omega-3 supplements for heart
    A Harvard Medical School study of more than 20,000 male physicians showed that while eating fish regularly reduced the likelihood of developing heart failure, the results for taking omega-3 supplements were less clear. Alice Lichtenstein of the Cardiovascular Nutrition Laboratory at Tufts University said the study helps show that more support is needed to modify the diets of people at risk for heart disease.     A CMS decision on whether to allow nurse anesthetists to bill Medicare for providing chronic pain treatment is expected by Nov. 1.
