- Ford: School nutrition professionals are trying to make food "fun"
At the recent Child Nutrition Industry Conference, hosted by the School Nutrition Association, Michael Katz, faculty instructor at The Culinary Institute of America, said that presentation is important in encouraging students to eat healthy food. Sandra Ford, president of the School Nutrition Association, said nutrition professionals are "trying to have fun" as they work to comply with federal meal standards. - UCSF adds MyFitnessPal tracking to its wellness program
The University of California, San Francisco, is using the exercise and nutrition tracking service MyFitnessPal in its Smart Choice Smart U wellness program for 25,000 employees, visitors and patients. MyFitnessPal will add 200 foods served at UCSF Medical Center campuses to its database, and the university is encouraging staff to use Fitbit, which syncs with MyFitnessPal, to track their activity. - Poll looks at overweight, obesity rates for Americans
About 26% of Americans are obese and more than 36% are considered overweight as measured by BMI, a Gallup poll indicates, despite recent evidence that people are exercising more and increasingly cite obesity as a serious health concern. The findings are based on a survey that asked 350,000 people for their heights and weights. Income, age and ethnicity played a role in obesity rates, researchers said. - Should breakfast be served after the start of school?
Lawmakers in Colorado are considering legislation that would require schools where at least 70% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunches to serve breakfast after the school day has begun. A sponsor of the bill, Rep. Tony Exum, D-Colorado Springs, said a goal is to give students more time to eat and said schools can choose how and where to serve breakfast.
