  • Research on slavery takes Neb. high-school students to Iowa
    Students from Arlington Senior High School in Nebraska recently traveled more than 300 miles to Davenport, Iowa, to learn more about the Underground Railroad and the lives of slaves including Milton Howard, who, like Solomon Northup of "12 Years a Slave," was kidnapped and sold into slavery. Social studies teacher Barry Jurgensen and his honors students visited a museum and a cemetery to conduct research. The students will nominate sites to include in the Network to Freedom, an initiative of the National Park Service to preserve the history of the Underground Railroad.   • Ill. students to interview veterans, record stories for state history project
    Freshman Student Council members at St. Charles East High School in Illinois will record interviews with local veterans on video, which they will submit to the Illinois Veterans History Project. Veterans ranging from World War II to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have agreed to interviews with the students. "This [is] a fine testament to this class and their efforts to honor veterans," said Mike Karson, a social studies teacher and adviser to the students. The Courier-News (Elgin, Ill.) (3/7)
  • Mo. school integrates historical literature to teach social studies
    Integrating historical literature into history, social studies and government lessons is one way to keep students engaged in history learning,
 says Pershing Elementary School principal Tara Wells in Missouri. The school's students are encouraged to go beyond citing events and dates, and place themselves in the eras they study to better understand the characters and events of that time.   • Mont. students to tell story of town's fight against hate crimes
    High-school students in a Montana school are working on a multimedia project highlighting community efforts in Billings to combat hate crimes and white supremacist activities in the 1990s. The students in Bruce Wendt's English and American history class will conduct interviews and create videos as part of the Community Storytelling Partnership project, which will be exhibited in June during the Not In Our Town National Leadership Gathering in Billings.   • Calif. teacher uses cross-curricular projects to teach about politics
    Lessons about politics and government can be blended into multiple project-based approaches, writes humanities teacher John Bosselman in this blog post. Bosselman shares how a project about propositions in California, where his school is located, was designed to give students more insight into the local political process. Students conducted literary analyses on books such as "1984," and they used graphic journalism and art to create a comic-style mural about the propositions.
