Global mobile application downloads doubled last year from 29.5 billion to 60.1 billion, generating $8.4 billion in revenue, according to Berg Insight. Downloads are slated to reach more than 100 billion in four years. "[C]ommon strategies today among many of the top revenue-generating app developers are to publish apps featuring a social layer on more than one platform using free-to-download monetization," Berg Insight's Johan Svanberg said. • Report: iOS, Android games bring in more money than handhelds
Spending on games in the App Store and Google Play surpassed spending on handheld gaming devices in the fourth quarter, according to App Annie and IDC. "Nintendo has stubbornly held out from bringing its franchises to smartphone platforms. Doing so has been costly, though, as gamers now spend roughly as much on Apple's iOS as they do on Nintendo's handhelds," Josh Ong writes. In an attempt to avoid that fate, Sony is readying a PlayStation app for iOS and Android devices for use as second-screen devices during PlayStation 4 play, Ong writes. • Cellphone-unlocking petition passes minimum-signature threshold
A petition on the White House website calling for the right to unlock cellphones has gathered the necessary 100,000 signatures to warrant a response, writes Brendan Sasso. The Library of Congress imposed the ban over copyright issues related to carrier networks, but the petitioners argue that they've paid for the devices and they have a right to use them on any network. Industry trade group CTIA counters that the phones are in fact heavily subsidized by the carriers as an inducement to sign wireless contracts, and that unlocking them creates a black market for overseas sales.
